8th week and still holding to the plan

When I first started focusing on training, using the amazing plan prepared for me by my lad (check out my last post for more details about that), I had 32 weeks until the ride (plus two weeks when we'll be away without a bike). I'm now into week 8 and so far managed to do the right distances on the right days. That said, the big challenges are still to come, starting this weekend with my first ever 100 km challenge, preceded by some steady distances on Thursday and Friday evenings. Interestingly, I felt just the same a few weeks ago when I was approaching my first 70 km ride, and I completed that without too much trouble, so 100 km is only a bit longer, surely!
The route I've chosen goes through some amazing rolling Leicestershire countryside which I visited for the first time last weekend. It's clearly a favourite for cyclists as I'm sure I saw more bikes than cars, many of which reminded me just how much slower I am than those cycling in groups... that's another thing I'm going to have to get used to before September.
One thing I do need to think more about is nutrition during longer rides. To be fair I've never previously done the sort of miles where this becomes a serious consideration, but now I'm getting to the point where the odd banana doesn't really cut it. I'm drawn to what is becoming my favourite YouTube channel, GCN (Global Cycling Network) who have a recipe for energy bars that definitely look appealing, and my lad is definitely a fan. I'll let you know how I get on once I've done the shopping and given it a go.
A Strava friend and work colleague today pointed me in the direction of an article called "10 mistakes people make when training for a multi-day cycling event". Relevant, huh? Indeed it is and I'd definitely recommend anyone thinking of doing this sort of thing to take a look. On a positive note, I think I've got most bases covered, or at least I'm aware of them.
